North America market: 40-inch LCD TV segment making more of a mark than 37-inch segment

Sales of 40-inch LCD TVs in North America were better than expected during the year-end holiday season, with related shipments beating out those for the 37-inch segment, according to a survey conducted by DisplaySearch.

Sony's 40-inch Bravia LCD TV (KDLV40XBR1) was the fourth best selling LCD TV model on the market in terms of sales volume, while one of Samsung Electronics' 40-inch models ranked sixteenth at the end of 2005 (the 47th-51st week of 2005), the research firm pointed out.

The Bravia LCD TV hit the market in late September, and in October was the top-selling model in the US market, according to Pacific Media Associates (PMA).

Samsung Electronics and Sony are the only two panel makers able to currently supply 40-inch panels and they have been pushing the 40-inch panel segment by aggressively expanding capacity and reducing prices. The two companies aim to set the 40-inch segment as the mainstream standard, compared with the 42-inch segment.
